Its role in the 'fight & flight' response
Introduction
In the human body there are two suprarenal (adrenal) glands, which are crucial to survival. Approximately each of these glands weighs only 4g; however they produce many hormones, which allow the body to react quickly and efficiently to dangerous situations. The major role of the suprarenal gland is to produce corticosteroids and catecholamines which allow the body to react to stress.
In the case of extreme stress, the body is able to undergo the fight or flight response. This is a coordinated response involving the suprarenal gland that can make the difference between life and death. The fight or flight reaction primes the body for physical action, as would be needed to either fight off an enemy or flee from a predator.
